Class 12. Straight Lines Only

Black charcoal on white 18 x 24. Show any examples you can find of natural objects drawn this way (and/or demonstrate). There are no straight lines in nature, so this requires transforming curved shapes into simplified straight-edged sections. I’m not sure why this exercise produces marked breakthroughs, but it does. Perhaps: it prevents concentration on small parts, students naturally using simpler, larger forms? It helps attain a clearer feeling of solid form? Overlaps and foreshortening become clearer?

STUDENTS:

1. Gesture warm-ups, tone to line.

2. 15-minute poses using straight lines ONLY.  Avoid tiny lines like dashes. Enlarge the figure.

3. Use straight lines only + tone, black paper suggested, 20+ minutes.  If time, repeat.

HOMEWORK: (#11) FEET. Misshapen feet can sabotage a good figure drawing. Make them look like feet, not bear paws. Follow instructions sheets.
