Class 21. Final Days #2

ONE POSE. Self-pacing again, following this sequence:

1. A few 3-4 minute blind contours

2. Draw any number of small boxes and do straight line sketches in each.

3. Make a new drawing (perhaps suggested by one of the straight line sketches) or develop the blind contour further.

-------------------------------

At this point everyone working with these concepts has developed considerable understanding, as well as more confidence and skill. Frequently, students have taken this course more than once and grew tremendously. Either in a structured course, or on their own, everyone who keeps at it gets much better. It’s a good idea to go back to exercises that were not thoroughly understood, or that felt natural and/or interesting. Or expand to long studies, more color, group compositions---or anything that interests each artist or instructor. Skills will catch up with goals and ideas.

EVERYONE WOULD BE HELD BACK BY THOUGHTS OF “PERFECTION”, AND FEAR OF GETTING IT WRONG. REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE NO RULES IN ART.  (At RISD, in the old days, they called it "the genius syndrome".) We all must trust our intuition (it’s usually right). Stop worrying, these are only drawings, these are only minutes or hours of a life; progress requires that we stumble, risk, explore and sometimes disappoint ourselves. Success often comes when you least expect it. KEEP DRAWING.
