Class 17. Ink Wash: Feeling and Process

Use the same set-up on the floor as yesterday with 3 white papers. Add 3-4 squares of cardboard (about 2” each) per person. Three poses about 10 minutes each: the model needs time to absorb each feeling; all watch as he/she works into each pose.

STUDENTS:

1. The model will express a feeling of LIGHTNESS. For this drawing, take handfuls of clean water from the cans provided, with flat hand gently spread the water to wet the ENTIRE page without rubbing and roughening it. Draw this pose on wet paper with pen or twig dipped in undiluted ink, trying for a sense of lightness.

2. Pose to express HEAVINESS. Dip the edges (NOT POINTS) of cardboard in ink and use them to draw the figure and the feeling. Paper dry or wet.

3. Pose to be COLLAPSING ALL THE WAY DOWN. Use bamboo brush with undiluted ink, thinking of weight. Dry paper.

4. Longer poses, 10 minutes each?. Choose any materials and methods. Experiment. What mood does the pose express?

HOMEWORK: (#15) HANDS. Carefully examine the bone and muscle diagrams and compare them to your own hands held in the same position. Draw at least 4 different positions of your own hand starting with a rough indication of the structure, adding outer form. What are knuckles? Where does the thumb come from?  Draw far enough up to find the wrist bones; what are these bumps? Follow assignment sheet.
