Class 14. Line : Qualities/ Composition/ Design

Line #1
Needed supplies for each: four ¼ pieces of 18 x 24 newsprint, a viewfinder and charcoal. Also two 18 x 24 papers---1 newsprint and 1 black or white. Cray-pas available.

STUDENTS: On “one side used”:
1. Brief blind contour warm-up, DON’T look at paper.
2. Modified blind contour, glancing at paper occasionally.
3. “Thumbnail sketches”; each draw 6-8 rectangles on 18 x 24 newsprint---not by folding into sections because there must be space between these shapes. Looking through viewfinders, select a section of the model that looks interesting and draw it with contour lines within each rectangle, all lines going to its edges, as the image goes to the edges of the viewfinder. New pose for each rectangle.
4. Do the same thing on each cut ¼ sheet, 4 poses, about 5 minutes each. PAY MORE ATTENTION TO COMPOSITION/DESIGN than to representation. Use cray-pas to block in negative space or any way you wish.
5. 1 pose, about 20 minutes. Full sheet, black or white. Using the viewfinder with the same consideration for composition, draw an extreme enlargement of a part of the figure that fills the page. Use cray-pas any way.

HOMEWORK: (#13 – take 2 days). MANY QUALITIES OF LINE. Using a sheet of gesture drawings, redraw at least three, according to the assignment sheet directions: one with all STRAIGHT LINES, one all LYRICAL, one THICK and ROUGH lines.  Use any materials.
