Class 19. Feelings: Emotion + Space + Lines, Tones, Color

INSTRUCTOR: Give students 3 “feeling words” for first 3 drawings. (i.e. confused, smug, shy?)

STUDENTS:

1.  Make 3 colored chalk 2-minute gestures, each with the given “feeling word”.

2.  One long pose; each choose a feeling you want to express. Consider how placement of the figure on the paper (space) affects mood and use a viewfinder to select a section of the model. Everything enhances or diminishes the expressiveness of a drawing: position of the figure, its placement, size, quality of marks used, materials, color; or black & white. Try everything.

HOMEWORK: (#17) Select a quotation either from the assignment sheet or find your own. Write the quote on the back or on the front as PART of the TOTAL IMAGE. Due the last day of class. Use any materials or process BUT BEWARE THAT THE LONGER THE TIME SPENT, THE HARDER IT IS TO MAINTAIN THE IMPACT OF A SPECIFIC FEELING. (Attention can shift from expressing feeling to “fixing it”.)  Or, instead of a quote as a point of departure, use drawings from class and experiment. How do you see them? How can you change, develop, re-compose, combine, enhance them? Emphasize personal expression, mood, use of the page---consider and try anything and everything.
