Class 10. Tone + Line: White on Black

Black 18 x 24 construction paper and white broken Conte-crayon or chalk. Examine  many master reproductions showing how and where tones were used to describe form in space. This will be the hardest day. It is counterintuitive which creates lots of uncertainty (especially for any who’ve been taught “light and shade” drawing). Many students will ask “HOW do you draw without lines first?”. No amount of explaining “how” answers this question. You can’t get this mentally. No one likes doing something they don’t understand; BUT DO IT and YOU WILL.

DEMONSTRATE: Start by “modeling” the surface form closest to you, using white on black. Use varied tones with the side of the chalk, and no lines. (Using lines first and then adding tones leads to “filling in an outline”, which is mechanical copying and flat.)

STUDENTS:

1. A brief TONE gesture warm-up on used newsprint.

2. Black paper with white Conte or chalk, 20 minute pose, the figure to fill the paper, using tone ONLY, adding bits of descriptive lines in the last 5 minute or so. It might help to start with light, sketchy axis lines, and build over them with tones which kind of wrap around; BUT DO NOT START WITH CONTOUR LINES.

3. 25-30 minute pose. Enlarge the figure greatly, draw only a section so that part of the figure is off the page. Do it the same way as the last drawing, starting with tones only. Add any lines (white and/or black) needed to clarify after the bulk of the figure is described with tones.

HOMEWORK: (#9) FORE-SHORTEN again. Follow assignment sheet.
